Blood pressure drug may enhance cancer treatment

Date: Oct-03-2013
A new study reveals that a common class of drug used to control high blood pressure could enhance cancer treatment by improving delivery of chemotherapy drugs and oxygen through tumors. A clinical trial is already in progress as a result of the study. Writing about their work in the online journal Nature Communications, researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, describe how the angiotensin inhibitor losartan increased blood flow and improved chemotherapy drug outcomes in mice with breast and pancreatic cancer...

Pharmacist interventions improve outcomes, reduce costs for home infusion therapy patients

Date: Oct-03-2013
Outcomes improve and there can be significant cost savings when infusion pharmacists monitor patients receiving home-based infusion and intervene when dose adjustments are necessary, according to a Walgreens outcomes analysis study being presented at IDWeek 2013™ in San Francisco...

First-ever targeted roadmap outlines steps to end childhood TB deaths

Date: Oct-03-2013
The deaths of more than 74 000 children from tuberculosis (TB) could be prevented each year through measures outlined in the first ever action plan developed specifically on TB and children. The Roadmap for Childhood TB: Toward Zero Deaths, launched today (October 1st, 2013) by global TB leaders in Washington D.C., estimates that US$120 million per year could have a major impact on saving tens of thousands of children's lives from TB, including among children infected with both TB and HIV...

Risk of heart attack and stroke doubles for patients with gout

Date: Oct-03-2013
New research published in Rheumatology journal has found that having gout doubles the risk of heart attack and stroke. The research tracked the health of more than 205,000 gout patients using data spanning five decades to determine links between gout and heart attack and stroke. The findings showed that gout patients are twice as likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke as those without gout. It is thought that the higher levels of uric acid which cause gout are also a strong risk factor for heart attack and stroke...

As health insurance marketplaces open information available from internists to assist patients

Date: Oct-03-2013
Starting from October 1st 2013, as part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), new health insurance marketplaces are open in each state to help patients sign up for health care coverage. The American College of Physicians (ACP) has resources available to address questions about changes in coverage and help physicians provide their patients with information about how to use the new marketplaces...

How to stay sharp in retirement

Date: Oct-03-2013
The more you want to use your brain - and the more you enjoy doing it - the more likely you are to stay sharp as you age. This is according to findings recently published in the Journals of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences by a team of researchers from Concordia University's Department of Psychology.  The new study has three major findings that can help forecast cognitive ability in one's golden years: The more one seeks out and enjoys cognitively demanding activities, the less likely one is to experience cognitive decline later in life...

Cell-detection system promising for medical research, diagnostics

Date: Oct-03-2013
Researchers are developing a system that uses tiny magnetic beads to quickly detect rare types of cancer cells circulating in a patient's blood, an advance that could help medical doctors diagnose cancer earlier than now possible and monitor how well a patient is responding to therapy. While other researchers have used magnetic beads for similar applications, the new "high-throughput" system has the ability to quickly process and analyze large volumes of blood or other fluids, said Cagri Savran, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University...

Under Affordable Care Act, out-of-pocket medical spending should drop for many

Date: Oct-03-2013
Out-of-pocket medical expenses will decline for most consumers who become newly insured or change their source of health insurance under the federal Affordable Care Act, according to a new RAND Corporation study. The study found that overall the Affordable Care Act will have a varied impact on health spending by individuals and families, depending primarily on their income and whether they would have been uninsured in 2016 without the program...

Plasmas an alternative to antibiotics?

Date: Oct-03-2013
As they destroy bacteria very efficiently, plasmas constitute an alternative to chemical disinfectants and potentially to antibiotics, as well. How they achieve this effect has been investigated by biologists, plasma physicists and chemists at the Ruhr-Universitat (RUB). Cold atmospheric-pressure plasmas attack the prokaryote's cell envelope, proteins and DNA. "This is too great a challenge for the repair mechanisms and the stress response systems of bacteria," says Junior Professor Dr Julia Bandow, Head of the Junior Research Group Microbial Antibiotic Research at the RUB...
