The layout of white matter brain abnormalities in people after traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) are similar to those found in early Alzheimer's, according to new research. The finding, published in Radiology, suggests that the first traumatic event that causes mTBI, or concussion, can result in a pattern of degenerative changes in the brain - causing symptoms that are similar to degenerative changes seen in early Alzheimer's. Drinking a few glasses of wine every week won't harm a pregnant woman's child, according to new research published in BMJ Open. The study looked at what effects moderate drinking during pregnancy might have on fetal neurodevelopment. Moderate drinking is characterized as consuming 3 to 7 glasses of alcohol per week. A total of 7,000 ten year olds, who participated in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), were assessed in their ability to balance - an accurate indicator of prenatal neurodevelopment...

Parents of kids with food allergies seem to be complacent about warnings on product labels, regardless of their child's history of the potentially life-threatening allergic reaction anaphylaxis, a new study revealed. XO1 Ltd, a University of Cambridge and Addenbrooke's Hospital spin-out company, has raised $11 million in funding to develop a new anticoagulant medication which prevents stroke and heart attacks without causing bleeding. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US have produced a computer program that helps individuals practise interpersonal skills so they feel more comfortable in job interviews or going on a first date. The individual interacts with an on-screen computer-generated face, while the program monitors and gives feedback on their body language, eye contact, pace and speech. In final draft guidance published in recent weeks, NICE has recommended dapagliflozin (Forxiga, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Astra Zeneca) for some people with type 2 diabetes. The agency changed its position on the drug after requesting further information from its manufacturers.
