Stronger Statin Doses Tied To Kidney Injury

Date: Mar-20-2013
A new study finds that high potency statins are tied to higher risk of being hospitalized for acute kidney injury compared with less potent statins and that the risk persists for two years. Lead researcher Colin Dormuth, of the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, Canada, and colleagues, write about their findings in a BMJ paper that was published online on 19 March. Statins are a widely-used class of drug for lowering cholesterol as a way to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, with higher doses prescribed for those at higher risk...

First Do No Harm - UCLA Researchers Find Patient-Centered Care At End Of Life Results In Happier Patients Who Live Longer In Less Pain

Date: Mar-20-2013
New doctors take an oath to first do no harm, but physicians often go too far in their quest to keep that oath - exposing patients to aggressive treatments that don't improve outcomes and drive up healthcare costs. Researchers from UCLA Urology have found that patient-centered care at end-of-life - ensuring a dying person's wishes are known and followed - results in happier, less depressed patients who are in less pain and survive longer...

They suggest the device could be ready for market in four years and has many potential uses, such as helping doctors monitor patients undergoing chemotherapy...

Traumatic Brain Injury Signs Are Often Misinterpreted Or Ignored

Date: Mar-20-2013
Given an estimated 225,000 Californians living with traumatic brain injury (TBI), it's hard to understand how the signs of TBIs can be missed, misinterpreted or simply ignored. And yet, they are. The most common TBIs are concussions, nearly 3.8 million of which are caused by sports and recreation activities in the United States annually, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
