Combining Motor Imagery And Physical Practice Enhances Performance

Date: Feb-21-2013
Adding movement to mental rehearsal can improve performance finds a study in BioMed Central's open access journal Behavioral and Brain Functions. For high jumpers the study shows that dynamic imagery improves the number of successful attempts and the technical performance of jumps. The technique of mental rehearsal is used to consolidate performance in many disciplines including music and sport. Motor imagery and physical practice use overlapping neural networks in the brain and the two together can improve performance as well as promoting recovery from injury...

Insight Into Tissue Regeneration Offered By Newt Transcriptome

Date: Feb-21-2013
Scientists have identified protein families expressed during tissue regeneration in newts, providing the groundwork for research into whether particular sets of genes are used for the purpose. The transcriptome - the map of all RNA molecules - of the newt is published this week in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Biology. Notophthalmus viridescens is a useful model in regenerative medicine, thanks to its ability to regenerate tissue, and this data gives insights into the mechanisms behind this process. N...

Decline In Walking Speed As We Age Likely Due To Thigh Fat

Date: Feb-21-2013
A new study from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center shows that an increase in fat throughout the thigh is predictive of mobility loss in otherwise healthy older adults. Lead author Kristen Beavers, Ph.D., and colleagues at Wake Forest Baptist said the findings suggest that prevention of age-related declines in walking speed isn't just about preserving muscle mass, it's also about preventing fat gain. Walking speed declines with age, said Beavers, and in older adults slower walking speed is a predictor of disability, nursing home admission and even death...

'Game Changers' For Dad/Daughter Relationships: Sports And Shared Activities

Date: Feb-21-2013
The most frequent turning point in father-daughter relationships is shared activity - especially sports ahead of such pivotal events as when a daughter marries or leaves home, according to a study by Baylor University researchers. "This is the masculine style of building closeness - called 'closeness in the doing' - whereas the feminine orientation is talking, 'closeness in the dialogue,'" said Mark T. Morman, Ph.D., a professor of communication in Baylor's College of Arts & Sciences...

Stage Fright, Horses And Their Riders

Date: Feb-21-2013
Most of us are familiar with stage fright - with all its nasty manifestations such as rapid pulse, dry mouth, shaky voice, blushing and sweaty palms - but is the condition restricted to humans? How do animals react to the presence of human audiences? These questions have recently been addressed by the group of Christine Aurich at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna...

Buyers Of Beauty Products Should Not Trust The Claims That Liposomes Can Carry Active Ingredients Into The Skin

Date: Feb-21-2013
Liposomes are small fat capsules, often added to beauty products. According to the beauty industry liposomes are capable of transporting active ingredients deep into the skin where they release the active ingredients so that they can alter the skin´s structure by rejuvenating and smoothing the skin. Research from University of Southern Denmark now shows that liposomes are not capable of transporting themselves deep into the skin, and thus they are not capable of transporting active ingredients deep into the skin...

Supplementation Necessary With Raw Meat Diet For Cats (or Tigers)

Date: Feb-21-2013
Animal scientists say a raw meat diet is a good source of protein for cats, but pet owners may need to supplement with other nutrients. In a new paper in the Journal of Animal Science, researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium analyzed the value of raw meat diets for cats and exotic felids. The researchers used several tests to evaluate the nutrients in meat from bison, cattle, horses and elk...

Caffeine Consumption And Mortality

Date: Feb-21-2013
A large study of nearly half a million older adults followed for about 12 years revealed a clear trend: as coffee drinking increased, the risk of death decreased. Study author Neal Freedman, PhD, MPH, National Cancer Institute, discusses the significance of these findings and the potential links between coffee drinking, caffeine consumption, and various specific causes of disease in an interview in Journal of Caffeine Research, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The article is available on the Journal of Caffeine Research website...

Vision Services Need Urgent Review In Kenya To Address Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Date: Feb-21-2013
Despite current beliefs, the degenerative eye condition age-related macular degeneration is a common cause of vision impairment and blindness in sub-Saharan Africa, requiring an urgent review of vision services, according to a study by international researchers published in this week's PLOS Medicine...

Women's Heart Disease Awareness Still Needs Improvement

Date: Feb-21-2013
Over the past fifteen years the number of women aware that heart disease is the number one killer has almost doubled. However, this awareness is still lacking among young women and minorities, according to a recent study published in the journal Circulation.  It is an umbrella term that includes a spectrum of different disorders that all affect the heart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the USA, UK, Australia, and Canada. In the U.S. it is responsible for a little over a quarter of all deaths...
