Increased Ambivalence Toward Medication Common In Stroke Patients With PTSD

Date: Jan-22-2013
A new survey of stroke survivors has shown that those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are less likely to adhere to treatment regimens that reduce the risk of an additional stroke. Researchers found that 65 percent of stroke survivors with PTSD failed to adhere to treatment, compared with 33 percent of those without PTSD. The survey also suggests that nonadherence in PTSD patients is partly explained by increased ambivalence toward medication. Among stroke survivors with PTSD, approximately one in three (38 percent) had concerns about their medications...

Recognizing Specific Triggers, Like Physical And Sexual Assault, May Decrease Suicide Risk In Military, Enhance Diagnosis, Treatments

Date: Jan-22-2013
According to results of a new study by researchers at the University of Utah, military personnel experience increased risk of suicidal thoughts or actions if they were the victims of physical or violent sexual assault as adults. In contrast, undergraduate students experience increased risk of suicidal thoughts or actions if they were the victims of unwanted sexual experiences as children or adults...

Huntington's Gene Disrupts Brain Cells Via Changes To Other Genes

Date: Jan-21-2013
Biological engineers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US have discovered that the gene that causes Huntington's disease, a fatal neurodegenerative disorder, damages brain cell function by disrupting the on-off switching patterns of other genes. They hope the discovery will lead to ways of restoring normal gene expression that can be used in treatments to slow or stop the progression of the disease in its early stages...

Quadruple Helix DNA Exists In Human Genome

Date: Jan-21-2013
60 years after Cambridge researchers Watson and Crick published their discovery of "double helix" DNA, the molecule of life, another team at the same UK university has published proof that four-stranded "quadruple helix" DNA also exists within the human genome.  They hope their discovery will lead to a new generation of targeted cancer therapies that use synthetic molecules to trap the complex DNA structures and thereby stop cancer cells multiplying...

Even After Rehabilitation, Drug Abuse Impairs Sexual Performance In Men

Date: Jan-21-2013
Researchers at the University of Granada, Spain, and Santo Tomas University in Colombia have found that drug abuse negatively affects sexual performance in men even after years of abstinence. This finding contradicts other studies reporting that men spontaneously recovered their normal sexual performance at three weeks after quitting substance abuse. The results of this study have been published in the prestigious Journal of Sexual Medicine, the official journal of the International Society for Sexual Medicine...
