New Anti-Tumor Cell Therapy Strategies Are More Effective

Date: Oct-29-2012
Targeted T-cells can seek out and destroy tumor cells that carry specific antigen markers. Two novel anti-tumor therapies that take advantage of this T-cell response are described in articles published in Human Gene Therapy, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The articles are available free on the Human Gene Therapy website...

Teenage Child Bearing Risk Linked To Pre-Teen Literacy Levels

Date: Oct-29-2012
Pre-teen girls with low literacy levels are more likely to bear children during their teenage years than their peers with higher literacy, researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing explained at the American Public Health Association's 140th Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California. The researchers said that their findings, from research carried out in the USA, builds on previous studies that detected an association between teenage child bearing and social inequities globally...

Identification Of Sensory Neurons Critical To Sense Of Touch Increase Understanding Of Chronic Pain

Date: Oct-29-2012
While studying the sense of touch, scientists at Duke Medicine have pinpointed specific neurons that appear to regulate perception. The sensory neurons are characterized by thin spikes, and based on their volume, these protrusions determine the cells' sensitivity to force. The findings in fruit fly larvae, which appear online in the journal Current Biology, demonstrate the first known function for the sensory neurons and provide insights that could broaden the understanding of chronic pain syndromes in humans...

'Adoption Activity Days' Can Help Children Find New Families

Date: Oct-29-2012
Children's parties or activity days, where prospective adopters meet children awaiting adoption, could be part of the solution to the current adoption crisis, according to research that will be showcased during the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science. "Such parties or activity days went out of fashion in the 1980s but no one is sure why," says Katherine Runswick-Cole of Manchester Metropolitan University who led the research. "However, our pilot study has shown an overwhelmingly positive response from practitioners, adopters and the children themselves...

Gene Variants Involved In Biology Of Obesity Detected Using Versatile Gene Discovery Chip

Date: Oct-29-2012
A large international study has identified three new gene variants associated with body mass index (BMI) levels in adults. The scientific consortium, numbering approximately 200 researchers, performed a meta-analysis of 46 studies, covering gene data from nearly 109,000 adults, spanning four ethnic groups. In discovering intriguing links to lipid-related diseases, type 2 diabetes and other disorders, the IBC 50K SNP Array BMI Consortium's study may provide fundamental insights into the biology of adult obesity...

Genetic Understanding Of Multiple Sclerosis Deepened

Date: Oct-29-2012
Five scientists, including two from Simon Fraser University, have discovered that 30 per cent of our likelihood of developing Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can be explained by 475,806 genetic variants in our genome. Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) commonly screen these variants, looking for genetic links to diseases. Corey Watson, a recent SFU doctoral graduate in biology, his thesis supervisor SFU biologist Felix Breden and three scientists in the United Kingdom have just had their findings published online in Scientific Reports. It's a sub-publication of the journal Nature...

25th Congress Of The European College Of Neuropsychopharmacology 2012 Highlights

Date: Oct-29-2012
Europe's leading voice for research on disorders of the brain: Celebrating a quarter-century at the cutting edge and looking ahead to new advances In the course of the 25th ECNP Congress leading experts and five and a half thousand psychiatrists, neurologists, neuroscience researchers and public health professionals from over 90 different countries met in Vienna, Austria, to celebrate ECNP´s 25-year anniversary and engage in groundbreaking debate...

New Bio-Adhesive Polymer Demonstrated In JoVE

Date: Oct-29-2012
A new video-article in JoVE, Journal of Visualized Experiments, details the use of a new laser-activated bio-adhesive polymer. The chitosan-based polymer, SurgiLux, was developed by scientists at the University of New South Wales. Chitosan is a polymer derived from chitin, which is found in fungal cell walls or in exoskeletons of crustaceans and insects. This molecular component allows SurgiLux to form low energy bonds between the polymer and the desired tissue when it absorbs light. The technology may soon replace traditional sutures in the clinic...

Researchers Publish First-Ever Omega-3 Study On A Population At The "Top Of Its Cognitive Game"

Date: Oct-29-2012
While Omega-3 essential fatty acids - found in foods like wild fish and grass-fed livestock - are necessary for human body functioning, their effects on the working memory of healthy young adults have not been studied until now. In the first study of its kind, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have determined that healthy young adults ages 18-25 can improve their working memory even further by increasing their Omega-3 fatty acid intake. Their findings have been published online in PLOS One...

Problems Identified At New England Compounding Center Facility, Says FDA

Date: Oct-28-2012
The New England Compounding Center (NECC) facility has problems maintaining its clean rooms, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) informed as it released a copy of the FDA Form 483 to the NECC. The FDA says it listed a number of "observations", including contaminated products. FDA inspectors visited NECC for a total of seven days from October 1st to 26th after the company had recalled a steroid medication. The clean room is an enclosed space that is supposed to contain a controlled environment with minimum levels of airborne particles and surface contaminants...
