1,590 people have become ill with West Nile virus and 66 have died so far this year, according to a report issued by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) yesterday - 56% (889) of them were classified as neuroinvasive disease. Forty-eight states have reported cases of West Nile virus infections in mosquitoes, birds or people. Tuberculosis that is resistant to first-line and second-line drugs is becoming more prevalent, an international team of experts reported in The Lancet today. They described levels of extensively drug-resistant TB as "alarming". 43.7% of TB (tuberculosis) cases in eight countries were found to be resistant to at least one second-line drug.
