One gene plays critical role in brain development

Date: Mar-18-2014
Research from the University of Adelaide has confirmed that a gene linked to intellectual disability is critical to the earliest stages of the development of human brains.Known as USP9X, the gene has been investigated by Adelaide researchers for more than a decade, but in recent years scientists have begun to understand its particular importance to brain development.

ACL injury risk reduced in young athletes by universal neuromuscular training

Date: Mar-18-2014
As youth participation in high-demand sports such as football, basketball and soccer has increased over the past decade, so has the number of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in teens and young adults. New research presented at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) found that universal neuromuscular training for adolescent athletes - which focuses on the optimal way to bend, jump, land and pivot the knee - is an effective and inexpensive way to avoid ACL sprains and tears. The ACL is a critical ligament that stabilizes the knee joint.

New cell line should accelerate embryonic stem cell research

Date: Mar-18-2014
University of Washington researchers have created a line of human embryonic stem cells with the ability to develop into a far broader range of tissues than most existing cell lines. "These cells will allow us to gain a much greater understanding of normal embryonic development and have the real potential for use in developing ways to grow new tissues and organs for transplantation," said Carol Ware, a professor of comparative medicine. She is the lead author of a paper describing the new cell line.

Building muscle in senior years could prolong life

Date: Mar-18-2014
New UCLA research suggests that the more muscle mass older Americans have, the less likely they are to die prematurely. The findings add to the growing evidence that overall body composition - and not the widely used body mass index, or BMI - is a better predictor of all-cause mortality. The study, published in the American Journal of Medicine, is the culmination of previous UCLA research led by Dr.

Young women most at risk least likely to be offered HPV jab

Date: Mar-18-2014
Young women who are most at risk of developing cervical cancer are the least likely to be offered the protective HPV jab and to complete the full course when they are, reveals research published online in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections. These women need to be better targeted to boost the overall uptake of the vaccination programme, which was well below the 80% required to make a significant difference to cervical cancer rates during its first three years of operation, say the authors.

CF Foundation and CF care expert partnership yields striking progress for people with cystic fibrosis

Date: Mar-18-2014
A decade of strategic efforts to improve care has had a key role in improving quality of life and added years to predicted survival for people with cystic fibrosis (CF) in the United States, according to the editors of a BMJ Quality & Safety supplement dedicated to the disease.Health outcomes for CF have improved dramatically following implementation of an innovative and aggressive plan to promote quality improvement at CF care centres.
