Suicide among young men is a major public health concern in many countries, despite great efforts to find effective prevention strategies. By interviewing close relatives and friends of apparently well-functioning young men who unexpectedly took their own life, Norwegian researchers found there had been no signs of serious mental disorder. This contradicts previous research which suggests that depression or other mental illness is an important risk factor in suicide.

Researchers from the Arthritis Research UK Pain Centre at The University of Nottingham have discovered a new way to potentially block the chronic and often debilitating pain affecting osteoarthritis sufferers.Currently, people experiencing the severe pain associated with OA are offered pain relieving drugs such as steroid injections and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which work by reducing inflammation. However, some of these drugs can be associated with severe side-effects that limit their use.

An interdisciplinary team of researchers from the University Hospital and the LIMES Institute of the University of Bonn has now discovered that sunburns contribute to the development of this malignant disease not only through direct alteration of pigment cell genomes but also indirectly through inflammatory processes in the surrounding tissue.

Researchers from the University of Surrey have launched a new programme of research called eSMART (Electronic Symptom Management using ASyMS Remote Technology), that uses mobile phone technology to remotely monitor patients who are undergoing chemotherapy to treat breast, bowel and blood cancers.The Advanced Symptom Management System (ASyMS) allows patients to report the side effects from their chemotherapy via a mobile phone.

Using music and singing in health care can improve quality of life for older people by easing pain, anxiety and depression.According to an article published in Mental Health Practice, the practices can be easily and effectively used as therapeutic nursing interventions.A literature review of articles related to anxiety and the use of music as a therapy for people over the age of 65 found it has a positive influence on wellbeing by providing enjoyment, social interaction, improved memory and social inclusion.

GPs who suspect that a child has been subjected to Female Genital Mutilation should refer the parent or guardian to social services, says the Royal College of General Practitioners. In its written evidence to the Home Office Select Committee released today, the RCGP describes FGM as 'child abuse' and calls for it to be treated as a safeguarding issue. However, the College also raises concerns about the capacity of social services to respond to referrals and is calling for a multi-agency approach to better support the young girls and women affected.
