Two 'friendly' robots, including a 3D-printed humanistic android, are helping scientists to understand how more realistic long-term relationships might be developed between humans and androids.ERWIN (Emotional Robot with Intelligent Network) is the brainchild of Dr John Murray, from the School of Computer Science, University of Lincoln, UK. It is now being used as part of a PhD study to find out how some of the human-like thought biases in robot characteristics affect the human-robot relationship.

New research in Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences highlights the need to integrate global strategies aimed at tackling nutrition and cognitive development within the first thousand days of childhood."Global estimates by UNICEF reveal that over 165 million children below the age of five suffer from stunted growth," said Professor Dr. Maureen Black from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and editor of the special issue.

Scientists at the University of York have discovered how the prostate gland develops for the first time, according to research published in Cell Press.The team behind the investigation, which was funded by the charity Yorkshire Cancer Research with further support from the EU FP7 Marie Curie ITN PRO-NEST project, says the findings could open the door to the development of new therapies for the treatment of prostate cancer.

A new treatment that boosts immunity to Epstein-Barr virus may benefit patients with multiple sclerosis, according to the results of an Australian study published in the Multiple Sclerosis Journal.In their study report, Michael Pender, a professor at the University of Queensland School of Medicine, Brisbane, and colleagues describe how a patient with advanced multiple sclerosis (MS) experienced noticeable clinical improvement after receiving 6 weeks of the immunotherapy treatment.

A recent paper published in European Urology, the official journal of the European Association of Urology, indicates that the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist degarelix (brand name: FIRMAGON®), may halve the relative risk of cardiovascular (CV) events and death in men with pre-existing CV disease (CVD) compared to treatment with commonly prescribed luteinising hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists. The report is based on a pooled analysis of 2,328 men with prostate cancer from six prospective, randomised trials.

How can we support them to do this?Hayhurst et al define resilience as "the ability to react to adversity and challenge in an adaptive and productive way". Their article published in Journal of Adventure Education & Outdoor Learning, centres on a 10 day youth sailing voyage in New Zealand and its effects on personal resilience. The results were fascinating.

Results of a new survey to assess treatment of skin and soft tissue infections shows 90% of dermatologists said they would initially prescribe an antibiotic for a routine, uncomplicated cutaneous abscess; however, guidelines recommend antibiotic use only in complicated cases. Research shows the use of antibiotics for uncomplicated abscesses may contribute to the increased incidence of multi-drug resistant pathogens in the general population. These findings, from researchers at Montefiore Medical Center, were published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.
