A review published online in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology by Australian and US diabetes researchers shows that regions like the Horn of Africa could experience major epidemics of type 2 diabetes if rapid improvements in economic conditions lead to a whole‐sale adaptation of Western lifestyles during the next three to four decades.Lead author and Director Emeritus at Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute, Professor Paul Zimmet AO says economic factors could determine future trends in rates of diabetes rather than conventional intervention measures.

In an agreement with the Norway Health Authority, UF Proton Therapy Institute will treat both children and adults who have rare tumors in the nasal and sinus cavity, skull, and brain. Currently there are no medical centers in Norway that offer proton therapy, and for cancers in highly sensitive areas, proton therapy provides patients a superior treatment that also minimizes risk of damage to vision, hearing and brain function.

New phase 3 data from the investigational therapy IDegLira (insulin degludec [Tresiba®]/liraglutide injection [Victoza®]) were presented at the World Diabetes Congress of the International Diabetes Federation. The DUAL™ II trial shows that in comparison with insulin degludec, IDegLira achieved superior control of blood sugar levels (HbA1cImproved fasting and postprandial plasma glucose levels were seen with IDegLira throughout the day and across meals, while providing significant weight loss for adults with type 2 diabetes uncontrolled on basal insulin.

Kancera announces the discovery of a new class of compounds that inhibits the epigenetic enzyme histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) and thereby controls the activity of the cancer cell genes. Severe side effects, due to poor selectivity, have limited the clinical use of HDAC inhibitors in the treatment of cancer, despite their promising treatment efficacy. For this reason, the pharmaceutical industry is now looking for HDAC inhibitors displaying a higher level of selectivity within this family of enzymes.

Many cities in Europe are changing, according to a new report which points to rapid transformations in urban transport in some areas. While cycling and efficient public transport are becoming the norm in some urban areas, Europe's transport sector is still a major contributor to excessive levels of greenhouse gases, air pollution and noise, the report says.

Attorneys representing plaintiffs in the US seeking compensation from the manufacturer and distributors of the birth defect-causing drug Thalidomide today lauded a $81 million settlement announced for Australian victims, but said progress for a similar settlement against GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) and Sanofi-Aventis (NYSE: SNY), does not appear likely without moving to trial.Steve Berman, managing partner of Hagens Berman, represents 49 victims who suffered birth defects after their mothers took the drug.

Coinciding with the World Health Organization (WHO) European Ministerial Conference on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases in Turkmenistan, MEPs, patient and physician representatives are today (December 3rd) meeting at the European Parliament to highlight that urgent national action is required to prevent stroke. "Stroke is a growing burden on our healthcare services but more importantly has a devastating impact on survivors and their families," said MEP Nessa Childers.

Dr Clifford Mann, President of the College of Emergency Medicine has said at Hospital Directions last week, that the A&E crisis in the NHS has put such pressure on medics that roughly one A&E doctor per department in London is currently seeking psychological help.Dr Mann was speaking at the conference in London and argued that the real crisis in A&E was caused by a lack of medics wanting to train in emergency medicine and the few that do are being put under increased psychological pressure as a result.

Food poverty in the UK "has all the signs of a public health emergency," warn experts in a letter to The BMJ.David Taylor-Robinson from the University of Liverpool, and colleagues show that the number of malnutrition related admissions to hospital in England has doubled since 2008-09.Furthermore, the Institute for Fiscal Studies has reported a decrease in calories purchased and substitution with unhealthier foods, especially in families with young children, while data also show an exponential rise in the number of people being issued food bank vouchers by frontline care professionals.
